Flying In

We recommend flying into the Liberia airport also called Daniel Oduber Quirós International Airport (LIR) if coming straight to the hotel and not arriving early to visit other areas.

LIBERIA:  Best for the Guanacaste region (Pacific Coast beaches). You can also arrive in Liberia if wanting to see La Fortuna area or Monteverde and want to fly in and out of the same airport. A smaller airport so customs and baggage is faster. Only 1.5-2 hrs from venue.

SAN JOSE: This airport offers the most international flights, but also a much further drive for our venue (4.5-5 hrs). This could be the best option if arriving early or staying after the wedding and wanting to visit the Monteverde Cloud forest or La Fortuna area and need more flight flexibility.

Getting to Azul Hotel & Retreat

Transportation will be coordinated prior to your arrival if you are not planning on renting a car. Once we have itineraries we will coordinate based on the flights coming in. It may seem overwhelming exiting and seeing all the companies offering to drive you to the hotel. There will be someone there waiting for you.

This Cafe is a great meet up spot if waiting for others to get through customs and baggage claim on other flights or to grab a snack or beverage for the ride. Just to the right of this is the exit where we will have the driver meet you. There is another grab and go station for snacks further down by the exit.

CAUTION: Only half of the road is paved on the way to the hotel. It does get bumpy. Relax, breathe and enjoy the scenery. This is all about the Pura Vida life, no rushing, no worries.

Travel Tips

Tip #1: Immigration lines can get backed up if multiple flights land around the same time. We recommend using the toilet on the plane before landing so you can get to immigration quickly. There is a toilet just to the left side of the immigration line if needed. Otherwise there is another toilet located just past immigration where you collect your baggage. Your luggage will likely already be waiting for you by the time you get through immigration, huge perk of a small airport.

Tip #2: There is a duty free shop just past immigration on your way to pick up your luggage, we recommend purchasing any preferred alcohol to bring to your room. We will also have a small selection with us in our room. The hotel does have multiple bars with nice cocktails.

Tip #3: The weather is beautifully tropical. We recommend packing shorts or lighter clothes in your carry on and changing in the restroom by the baggage claim area. It can get a little warm once exiting immigration.

Tip #4: The currency of Costa Rica is the Costa Rican Colons ( koh-LOHN-ay). As of February 14, 2026 1 US Dollar=491 Colons. Places take US dollars everywhere, any cash back will be in Colons. We trust using credit cards with larger vendors and stores, but not with smaller vendors. There are places to get Colons at the airport, however we cannot speak to how well the exchange is as we have not converted any currency there. You can also order them ahead of time at your local bank in Canada or US.
